Have you encountered the evil viburnum leaf beetle? If so, how did you tame it? I'm especially interested in organic solutions.

They look incredible Susan. Obviously the risk paid off and is going to continue to pay dividends every spring.

I haven't seen them before but I will check them out now and see if I can't fit one into my garden somewhere.

Susan, your garden looks incredible! And you're right about the layering thing being satisfying. I am finding it tricky in a very confined city yard, however, to shoehorn in something substantial behind my perennials. I hope to achieve what you do with trees with various fence-climbing plants.

However, if you're not going for a naturalistic garden, but instead something more formal or just plain weird, well, mopheads and snowballs are fun!

I just got six snowball viburnums from Fedco. I loved photos I saw of them in Penelope Hobhouse a few years ago trimmed up into absurd little lollipop trees. She called them "Guelder roses," I believe.

I hope they make my humble country vegetable garden look like Villandry.

How soon in their life did you start the 'three stems out' thinning?

We have two smallish bushes that were placed two years ago. This spring is the first time they have looked 'settled'...

Might be time for us to look at the structure, mmm?
