I’m a garden writer and blogger, gardening coach, Master Gardener, and activist for urban and suburban greening in the Washington, D.C. area. That’s in USDA Zone 7A and the Mid-Atlantic Humidity Belt.
Writing in Print
- In print, my column “The Gardening Coach” appears in two Maryland newspapers.
- My articles have appeared in Landscape Architecture Magazine, Fine Gardening, Organic Gardening, Washington Home and Garden, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s publication.

Writing on the Web
- I’m the primary author of the large how-to website Sustainable and Urban Gardening. As editor of the website, I’ve included great, on-topic articles by trusted authorities – the 22 contributors listed here.
- I write and produce the rowdy, award-winning blog GardenRant with my three co-conspirators, grinning in the photo right. Clockwise from upper left are Elizabeth Licata, Michele Owens, Amy Stewart and myself.
Activism
- After writing Greening the White House Grounds, I launched the national media campaign Green the Grounds in April 2009, with the mission of encouraging America’s First Families to practice and promote sustainable landscaping on the grounds of their official residences.

- In September of 2009 I launched another national media campaign, this time with 8 other garden communicators across the U.S. It’s the Lawn Reform Coalition, dedicated to promoting natural lawn care, regionally appropriate lawn species, and design alternatives to lawn.
- I’m on the Advisory Board of Montgomery Victory Gardens, a nonprofit encouraging and teaching the growing of edibles in Montgomery County, Maryland.
- I co-founded the DC Urban Gardeners and now write their website, DC Urban Gardeners.
